This book primarily advertises for the author's Spartan Races. You've probably seen these races being advertised, or other similar mud/obstacle course runs (Tough Mudder, Warrior Dash, etc...) The Spartan Fit book covers (in great detail) the history of Sparta, their warrior ethos, and training regime. The book covers recommended workouts, diets, and lifestyle routines. That being said, it's not a particularly useful book for those looking to improve their workouts unless they are starting from absolute scratch. As someone who has done obstacle course/mud races, and trains on a daily basis, I didn't find much value in the book - a lot of the concepts (like going to sleep at 8PM) are just common sense for a healthy lifestyle. The keys are: moderation and discipline.Overall: 3/5 stars

The book was more PR for Spartan races and the author than any kind of valuable training program with some pseudo-history of Sparta mixed-in. Not much beyond basic guidelines for healthy living found in most fitness and healthy lifestyle guidebooks.

This book provides you with some basic nutrition and workouts in order to prepare you for your first Spartan Race. If you already do some sort of physical training, you probably won’t find anything surprising. What is truly great about this book thw first half filled with motivating stories and advice on building the mental toughness to conquer any obstacle in life, not just a Spartan race.

Very quick read full of interesting and useful information. After reading this book and completing the 30 day program you will certainly be as prepared as you can be for an OCR event. As a Trifecta Member I would recommend this book to any and all OCRers.

First read 'Spartan Up'.... in just a day! Couldn't wait for this book to arrive, although it took me two days to read! Joe De Sena is a great motivator! I'm 59 and have completed five OCR's since reading his books! My Goal: The 2017 Trifecta in Hawaii! My suggestion: Buy them both and go compete!

My husband and I have recently started to get in shape. He is running his first Spartan race in a couple of months. We have been listening to this book on audio and we are both really enjoying it.

I downloaded this to my Kindle because I'm preparing for a rather rugged 10K trail run (working my way towards a half marathon) and wanted to be in better condition this time around. If I incorporate a quarter of the exercises into my training, I will be! The majority of the book is the standard fare of avoiding processed foods, getting eight hours sleep, etc.

Solid book - I liked the chapters that talked about the mental aspect to training and resilience.Although I have 10+ years experience in the fitness/ health/ teaching industry I took away some useful perspectives and ideas that I will incorporate into my own training.All round good read, easy read, useful read!

Preface

When this book was first published in 1969, African-Americans faced a serious crisis arising from the assassination of Martin Luther King, Jr. Angered by this act, blacks took to the streets in cities around the country, demonstrating their outrage by massive acts of property destruction. In general, white individuals and institutions responded to the tragedy of the assassination by attempting to make some amends for past injustices. Colleges and universities recruited black students in greater numbers than ever before, and programs of African-American and African studies were organized on a wide scale. It appeared that equality for blacks had finally become an issue of critical importance.

However, by the time the second edition appeared in 1975, little change in the status of African-American people relative to that of white people had come about, but many changes in the mind and mood of African-American people had occurred, mainly in the ascendancy of nationalist sentiment in the black community. Black nationalist organizations thrived until the Federal Bureau of Investigation and other government agencies commenced a systematic campaign to destroy this movement. Because of this campaign and the inevitable internal dissension within these organizations, the movement virtually collapsed. Nevertheless, with the advent of affirmative action, some progress was made in the status of African-Americans in the United States. For a brief time there was an official commitment to racial equality.

With the third edition in 1987, the mood of the country had changed, and conservatism had become the dominant ethos of American politics and of the country as a whole. The right-wing administration of Ronald Reagan and the egocentricity of the American people combined to mount a serious attack on compensatory justice. They were joined in this effort by black conservatives who opposed affirmative action and other measures to improve the lot of African-Americans, insisting that blacks must rely on individual initiative and self-help rather than government assistance. These forces succeeded in reversing some of the gains that African-Americans and others had made through intensive struggle.

The fourth edition in 1993 found African-Americans facing additional challenges of major proportions: acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), adolescent pregnancy and childbearing, crack cocaine and other substance abuse, homelessness, and widespread homicide, among others. By promoting and condoning racial oppression through the years, the government must bear major responsibility for the impact of these problems on African-Americans.

In this, the fifth edition of the book, it should be noted that there has been little, if any, change in the problems enumerated in the fourth edition. In addition, there has been an intensified effort to end affirmative action, thereby impeding an important avenue to black progress. Because of this, a chapter on the subject has been added, along with some other changes, including a chapter on crime and justice.

Although this book is a sociological study of African-Americans, it addresses the general reader as well as the professional student of society. It is hoped that sociological perspective and analysis have not been sacrificed.

As with the other recent books in this series, this Classic study of the Ju 52 offers the most definitive account published in recent years of this bulwark of the Luftwaffe, which first saw military service in the 1930s and was then engaged in operations in the Spanish Civil War through the end of World War II.

The all-metal, three engine Ju 52/3m enjoyed a solid reputation among its crews and the troops and paratroops who used it and depended on it. It is a machine synonymous with the images of the German attacks on Holland and France in 1940 and Crete in 1941 when hundred of "Tante Jus" were used to drop paratroopers to successfully capture key tactical and strategic areas.

The full history, however, goes back much further. Built as a passenger aircraft for Deutsche Lufthansa, the Ju 52 ranges as far as South Africa, Mozambique, India and Latin America, as well being operated by several other European countries such as Belgium, Equador, Peru and Uruguay. Britain operated several Ju 52s.

The aircraft was first blooded in the Spanish Civil War, where it was pressed into service as a crude, but effective, bomber with the Legion Condor. From then on the Luftwaffe deployed it on every battle front in the West, in the Mediterranean and in the East. An example also flew in Iraq. The Ju 52 served as a stalwart transport, often operating in the most hostile conditions, with ice or dust, lifting men, animals, food, supplies, ammunition, mail, and spare parts vital for German military operations, such as the North African supply routes at Demyansk, Stalingrad and also in the Ardennes in 1944. It was also converted into the ambulance and mine-hunting roles, and was adapted as a seaplane. After the war, the Ju 52 flew on as late as the 1980s, testimony to its strength and reliability.
