As a true crime fan, I found this book to be the best in many years. I could not put this down and read the whole thing in two days. I'm especially impressed with Becky's dad's candor as he tried to look at his family and how they behaved and whether or not there was anything about his family that could have contributed to this tragedy. It also points out the sad case where young teenagers are so torn between what to tell their parents versus their friends, Most importantly, it really honed in on the reality of teenage bullying and what horrible trauma can occur when being subjected to bullying both in school and at home from siblings, as shocking in Britain as here in the United States. Darren Galsworthy draws you into himself and his family so you feel like you are watching these events unfold. You share his joys, his pain and his anger and the slow destruction of a happy family Finally, Darren and his family, as they continue to deal with the aftermath of this tragic event even today, personify courage, strength, hope and the need to keep moving forward. I felt grateful that I have not gone through what this family endured
I read A LOT and have read more true crime novels and memoirs than I can count. This is the best non-function I have read in a long time, maybe ever. The story, the writing, and the family it follows just pull the reader in. I often think non-fiction is slow or contains chunks that can be easily skipped. That's simply not true of this book. I hung on every word and could not put it down. I even did side research and watched numerous you-tube videos of the interviews discussed here. I was simply drawn in. The problem with non-fiction is that the story has already played out and no matter how badly the reader is wishing for a happy ending we know it's not going to happen. I'd still like to know WHY! I know Becky's family never got that answer or the whole story of her murder so me, a stranger, asking why us silly. However, I cannot fathom how a son raised in love as part of a family like any other around the world could turn into a monster. I pray this family finds the peace they so desperately need and deserve. How you continue after going from a home in constant motion with three kids and one grandchild to a home that the only remaining child cannot stand to be in I just cannot fathom. My prayers are with you Darren and Anjie.
I have read a lot of true fiction. This book is one of, if not the best book in this genre I have read. Here is what makes it a "can't put down" book to read:1) The author was brave enough to express all the raw pain he endured. He was vulnerable, honest, and complete in the story he told. He was also fair far beyond what anyone might expect. He wrote openly about the care, love, and concern that he had for his stepson prior to the murder. That alone must have been an extremely difficult task. Doing so made the heartbreak and despair all the more real and relatable.2) The events the book outlines are bizarre, disturbing, and just plain sad.3) The foreshadowing of events in the early chapters was a terrific approach that works perfectly for the book: it gave the book balance, continuity, and understanding.4) The writing is so well done that there is not a single boring page. I kept turning and turning and turning past 4 a.m. The only part that was difficult for me was keeping track of all of the family members by name who appeared during the search and trial phase of the book. I understand that. It's OK.5) The book is well written. I don't recall a single editorial error. I am not fully aware of all British grammar conventions, but the writing works for me. I also got to expand my vocabulary for British references like "wellies," and appreciated the fact that I already knew a number of terms like "bonnet" and "boot."This book captures parental pain better than any I have read. I simply cannot imagine what it would be like.... Also, the love of the parents was just amazing, considering the events that transpired. I was fully expecting them to divorce by the end of the book. Happily, they found love instead.
This is the most amazing true crime book I have ever read.I lost my son at 18 in a car wreck, which I thought was most devastating. However, nothing can compare to this story. My son's best friend was also killed in the wreck. My heart has healed solo much and I npw pray yours will as well.My heart aches for you and your family.And what a great love between you and your wife to withstand ALL you both went through but stayed together.My love to you both.
Extremely sad ! Very well written, especially for someone who lived it and had to feel pain while writing it. I will never forget this story and this beautiful girl that was taken for no reason!Thank you for sharing your story!
This book was simply heart breaking. It is hard to understand how people could viciously murder someone and have no regard for human life. I am amazed at how strong this family is for all they have had to endure.
